Basic White Bread

Ingredients

1 ¼ cup water
1 cup milk
¼ cup butter
5 1/2 cups flour, divided
4 Tbsp. sugar
2 tsp. salt
1 envelope yeast (2 tsp.)

Directions

  1. Heat water, milk and butter until very warm (120-130 degrees)
  2. Combine 2 cups flour, sugar, salt, and yeast.
  3. Add liquid mixture, beating on low speed, then beat at high speed for 3 minutes.
  4. Add 1 cup of flour and beat 5 minutes.
  5. Stir in 2 ½ cups flour.
  6. Knead on floured surface adding up to ½ cup flour, 8-10 minutes or until dough is smooth, elastic and appears blistered beneath the surface.
  7. Place in a large, greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap and dish towel. Let rise in warm draft free place about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  8. Punch down and knead until smooth.
  9. Cut in halve cover with plastic and towel, let rest for 15 minutes.
  10. To shape, roll out each half in 12”x9” rectangle. Starting at a narrow edge roll as for jelly roll. Seal ends and seam by pinching with fingers.
  11. Place each roll seam side down in greased 8”x4”x3” loaf pan. Cover with plastic and towel, let rise until double in size.
  12. Bake at 400 for 25-30 minutes or until loaves sound hollow when tapped on the bottom. Remove from pans and cool on racks.
